Icarus

This sculpture is a representation of the ego driven, ever increasing capacity to consume the world's natural resources at an alarming and catastrophic rate.

In that consumption we then pollute the earth with waste produced from this unharmonious world wide culture.

In the legend, Icarus fly's too close to the sun and has his wings burned. For me, this sculpture is a representation of our consumerist culture, which can only ultimately bring about catastrophic results, not only for the world but for us as a species, if we continue to live in this detached selfish existence.

We walk on a tenuous tightrope in our economies, social infrastructure, as well as spiritual existence. Is it ignorance or just complete arrogance of the bond we all have to this precious planet of ours? How long before we wake up and take accountability for our perverse behaviour?

This sculpture consists of various recycled materials such as milk bottles, windsurfer sail frames, tailors dummy, plastic packaging and many other varied recycled materials.
