Deckchair

This project has been funded by SW Foundation which allowed able bodied and disabled learners to work alongside each other. Everyone shared the design process and production of our enormous deck chair, which came from the request that we work on a seaside theme. Each group member did their own small painting on the frame of the chair which gave them a real sense of ownership of the project. They saw how recycled materials can be transformed from 'a pile rubbish' into something that is beautiful and can give others, who will look at it, pleasure.

The mathematics and engineering of how a deck chair is actually put together has been a challenge to the group and the scaling up of all parts has had the calculator out on many occasions. The group looked at colour and texture and became bold in their usage. The canvas of the chair started out as rather dull stripes of colour, but became vibrant textiles. The group became more creative with using various paints and glues as they understood the need for durability. Everyone grew in confidence and self esteem through this project and they are looking forward to seeing it in situ.
