Jane Burt:

Battery hen eggs are cheap and plentiful but at what cost to the chickens confined in their gloomy and cramped quarters? Often six to nine debeaked, terrified birds are confined to a small cage for up to a year. They are kept in holding sheds which house between 50,000 - 125,000 birds. They are drained of calcium which is taken to form egg shells and often develop osteoporosis. They are unable to function normally and develop ulcers and broken bones. Due to their poor living conditions they are routinely given antibiotics. Chickens are natural roamers and thrive in space and fresh air and this enforced lifestyle is totally alien to their natural habitat.

'At What Cost' is an installation that brings attention to the plight of these poor birds and hopefully makes the viewer think about the production of their breakfast egg and what can be done to bring about an end to the cruel farming system of the battery hen.
