Caroline Preston:

The Time it Takes

The time it takes to do what?
Wax, dripped; the time it takes to drip, drip, drip, form, mould, shape, create
Repetition, repeat, recreate
Ritual
Inspired through travelling and living in Japan and the importance given to the cleansing and healing properties of water, a culture of contemplation, listening, meditating
Time
Lost languages, time changed; the typography chest symbolic of past processes, communication, compartments, languages, and the wicks; lingering, almost gone.
Wax; personalised seals closing a letter; individuality, personality, letters, dreams, dreamed, forgotten
'The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams' - Eleanor Roosevelt

This piece aims to reflect on life in the 21st Century, turning away from past traditions, seeking change, the next best electronic gadget to enhance our ever improving lives and lifestyle choices. We forget how long it took to print a newspaper, to write a letter, to carve a seal that personalised our letter, that candles could tell time, and we recycle, or we try, and then we invent more things to be recycled.
