'Style' Youth Group

The group was set up in 1993 as a hobby group focusing on fashion, clothes and textiles, today more than 150 children and teenagers attend, we also involve children with special needs. The Director is Svetlana Pakhomova.

Although it's a hobby group the standard and level of instruction and work is high, in fact a State certificate is awarded to those who complete the full course of training. We have created more than 120 collections of clothes and have received more than 100 diplomas, with seven International Diplomas being awarded at festivals of youth fashion.

Recently we have been working with non-traditional materials, clothes are knitted from 'waste' such as old video and audio tape with amazing results. We have also used straw!

We are working with Russian Touch from England to publicise and exhibit our work outside Russia to encourage others to make clothes and have fun as we do!

'Za Okolitsay' ' In the meadow'. Made by Nastya Zhuravlova Yaroslavl Russia.Model Amanda

Nastya is a teacher at the Yaroslavl, Russia Youth Group 'Style', she is studying for a degree in textiles.

This idea was born when my mother and I were having a cup of tea with sweets in the summer. The sweet wrappers were so beautiful that we didn't want to throw them away. We tried to line them up in order of colour. We try to never throw anything away so we stopped to think what we could do with them. The decision came quickly to try to make a fashion collection - Russian costume!

During the next 4 years ( four, yes!) we collected wrappers and made the first dress. Collecting, selecting, sorting out wrappers from just about the whole city! Friends, friends of friends and people we did not know collected them because for one dress we knew we needed from 11,000 to 20,000 wrappers!

After 4 years we had enough, the wrappers were folded and laid onto a pattern we had made to make the correct range of colour and geometric layout of the dress, they were then joined together by sewing.
