Wearable Art
Petra Turner - Tutor ACE group of students Brixham Adult Education.
'Got it covered'
Model is Margaret who is one of the ACE students who helped make the piece ( in wheelchair )
Maker - the ACE Experimental Textiles Class from ACL Brixham under Tutor Petra Turner. This class is made up of adults with various disabilities .
Inspiration - The idea was to make some type of garment that would enable Margaret to model easily, as she is in a wheelchair. Petra thought a rain cape would be most practical to model and would be seen clearly. As plastic bags are so readily available they were heat fused and shaped into flowers, layered in colours and attached with paper fasteners. The cape base itself is a clear plastic shower curtain. The shoulder bag was made by Margaret out of strips of plastic bags and discarded wools.
'Eat your heart out Cheryl'
Makers - ACE Experimental Textiles Class from ACL Brixham under Tutor Petra Turner. This class is made up of adults with various disabilities.
Inspiration - Tutor Petra noticed a small photograph in a magazine of Girls Aloud band member Cheryl Cole wearing a dress which appeared to have white plastic flowers on the bodice. Obviously it was a designer dress costing hundreds of pounds. It was decided to ... tongue in cheek... make our own designer dress.
The dress pattern, which was acquired from a discarded magazine, consisted of many panels. Some calico was chosen as the base and everyone in the class was involved in the painting and stitching and attaching recycled bits and final construction.
The dress surface design evolved along the same flowers theme as the cape with even Alan Titchmarsh showing his face on one of the panels! Fused clear plastic flowers were attached over the dress which catch the light and also were made into accessories by Chrissy. The bag was made by Maria, another ACE class member out of strips of fabric and aquarium tubing.
Modelled by Chrissy from ACL Brixham who works with Petra in the ACE Textiles class, and who helped make the piece.
