Rosemary More
Threat to the Adonis Blue
The decline of the butterfly population in England is extremely disturbing.
Since the 1940s, the area of semi-natural woodland in England has declined by 30-40%. Losses have been higher in the intensive arable land regions in central and eastern England.
Amongst other causes effecting butterflies is the cessation of active broad-leaved wood management, especially the decline in coppicing.
I am especially interested in butterfly species threatened with extinction.
I have used a former art-work (last year's trail 'albatross') and transformed it into a butterfly. The base is a white net curtain (found in a skip), some old black tights and a bean-pole. It is decorated with bits of fabric, CDs, wire, string, ribbon, and other recycled finds.
The botanical gardens forms a suitable setting for this work as it could form a brilliant area for butterflies to grow.
