'Junk Mail Flood'

Recycled door, metal rods recycled from last years' TRAIL, various recycled/rescued items

Why 'Junk Mail' - well what started as an irritation with unwanted items coming through the letterbox became increasingly annoying until I reached the stage, inspired by last years TRAIL entries, when I thought 'If I can only convey the cost and the damage Junk Mail does to the planet to others'.

Eight months of planning and modifying have resulted in the final sketch to launch into my first ever attempt at sculpture. I only hope that the final result conveys the strength of my feeling and in some small way can persuade you to do something about it.

Why 'Flood' - Floods do damage to property, lives and in its' own way so does Junk Mail. Flood water is hard to stop, just like Junk Mail. Floods cost time and money and so does Junk Mail.
Floods spread rapidly and the Junk Mail 'business' has certainly done that .. perhaps it's time to turn the tide, let's try and reverse the flood. Floods leave a lasting scar on where they touch, Junk Mail leaves a lasting legacy on the world.

The Facts
Over 20 BILLION pieces of Junk Mail (excluding free newspapers) are produced every year in the U.K.
On average well over 600 Junk Mail items are delivered through the average British letterbox
Over half a MILLION tonnes of paper are used for Junk Mail every year
To produce one TONNE of this paper takes over 7000 gallons of water and 390 gallons of oil
It takes about 17 mature trees to produce a TONNE of paper so 9.35 MILLION trees are needed annually
Stopping junk mail being delivered will save around 4kg of CO2 per household her year.
