COLOURS OF DEVON

Family and community workshops and work with local youth groups have been integral to TRAIL events, these have proved to be a great success leading to community sculptures that are included as part of the TRAIL which not only establish a local involvement and ownership of the event but gives the artists the opportunity to discuss and debate the topics of sustainability and recycling with the participants

TRAIL has been commissioned by Teignbridge District Council to deliver four creative, family workshops during the Summer Fun Fest afternoons.

The workshops will be held at
Dawlish LAWN WEDNESDAY 6 AUGUST 12.00pm - 16.30pm
Teignmouth DEN on THURSDAY 7 AUGUST 12.00pm - 16.30pm
DECOY Park Newton Abbot on FRIDAY 8 AUGUST 12.00pm - 16.00pm
DAWLISH WARREN on SATURDAY 9 AUGUST 12.00pm - 16.00pm

to create a community sculpture entitled the Colours of Devon which will be exhibited on the TRAIL.

The predominant colours will be red representing the Devon soil, blue the Devon coast and green the lush Devon landscape plus some use of blacks and greys to represent the stony outcrops of the moors.
The workshop activity has been designed on a drop in basis to engage at all levels from the knowledgeable to the novice allowing every one to work at their own pace, ensuring all participants can gain from the experience both in terms of artistic endeavour and knowledge about sustainable Devon.
The workshops will use the techniques of weaving, knotting, plaiting, threading, tying and binding to create individual elements based on dream catchers these will fill the triangular shapes created by TRAIL artists with the colours arranged in strata as in the landscape. The action of weaving and knotting symbolises the coming together of the community working as one for the benefit of both society and the environment. Only materials sourced from scrapstores, recycling centres and waste management sources will be used. To assist with the activity TRAIL artists will have sorted a wide range of materials into colour combinations, have samples, instruction sheets and drawings of completed sculpture so that everyone will be able to see how their individual creations relate to the whole.
The activity is free with no booking required.
Trail artists look forward to working with you and creating the community sculpture 'The colours of Devon' for Trail 2008.
