Rock Pools

This year my sculpture uses three metal wheels from an old seed dibber to form the pools filled with shells. The surround of flotsam and jetsam was collected on local beaches. 10 to 160 million years ago creatures, like these shellfish, died and sank to the bottom of the ocean then were covered by mud and sand, creating the oil we use today.

Recently reading 'Oil' by Upton Sinclair (the book 'Let There Be Blood' was based on) made me realise that man's capitalistic greed for oil as the key source of wealth started well before the First World War. Today, wars are still based on the desire for oil which is the driving force for industry and travel. My rock pools symbolise 'pools of oil' and 'pools of water', the basis for current and future wars, leading to 'pools of blood'.
