In Memory of the Plastic Bag

I love to give new life to discarded, surplus or neglected objects. Apart from using mostly recycled materials, I now prefer to make my outdoor sculptures move and make sounds in the wind and glint and sparkle in the sunlight.

Practicality must be combined with the ornamental. Things must look good as well as work. The coloured bottle tops and glittery shapes remind me of my childhood when I used to collect small, round, coloured metal off-cuts from a factory yard. I always will be a magpie.

Like winged seeds plastic bags have been carried to the four corners of the earth where they lie, unable to rot away, suffocating and poisoning wildlife.
Plastic is oil made solid. It is tough, light, flexible and water resistant and therefore incredibly useful - don't we know it!

If mankind has been categorised by different ages: Bronze, Iron age, well this is surely the Plastic age. Not a very romantic title but one we have to address quickly if our children are to survive to witness a new and harmonious age.

Minimise your use of plastic. Reduce, reuse, recycle and recreate. Use your imagination and creativity. Do something unusual every day. Don't rely on friends, neighbours or governments for initiative. Be the catalyst for change yourself. Let's make the plastic bag history.
