Torquay Boys' Grammar School
The art department at Torquay Boys' Grammar School has a long history of work in the community. Work with primary schools in the South West is a regular yearly feature, producing work for display at Paignton Zoo, Plymouth Aquarium and The Living Coasts Exhibition. In 2006 young artists worked in a graffiti workshop producing panels for the under fives picnic area at the education centre at Paignton Zoo. The Year 8 Art Masterclass, (which also include girls from Torquay Grammar School for Girls) arranges visits to galleries etc. The Eden Centre in 2007 and in 2008 the Tate St Ives and the George Davis' exhibition of paintings at the Ariel Centre in Totnes have given students essential experience of sculpture and painting at first hand. Invited artists working with the art department include Anthony Frost, Stef Francis and Janet Mitchell Mitchell amongst others. Pupils have completed work in mixed media and recycled materials including textiles and plastic. Sixth formers have worked alongside professional musician's poets and artists to produce art work in special events which have been open to the public. Teachers David Reshad and Head of Department George Davis have spearheaded these events.
For the Trail event 2008 a select group of lower Sixth art students have been working on mural designs for the swimming pool area on the sea front. Inspired by collaboration with local poet Bob Hill, they are aiming to interpret his 'Teignmouth Riddle' poem, giving it their own original twist.
